Swimming Teams
The swimming team caters for all types of swimmers; from international, national, regional, county level and school swimmers, and those who wish to swim for fitness and enjoy the social side of the team. For each of the club sessions the various abilities within the club are spread across the six lane pool, which can be adjusted between 25m and 33m. Joining the swimming team provides a fantastic chance to meet new people within the University from both the swimming and water polo teams, given the wide range of backgrounds, ages and study subjects it attracts.
Coaching Swimming coaching is managed by head coach and UBSC Director of Performance Swimming Jez Birds, who coaches all Performance Squad sessions and several fitness/social sessions. Training Training sessions are as varied as our club members, with club sessions catering for both swimmers and water polo players and always offering variety in terms of skills, drills, fitness and strength sets to keep all swimmers interested. For competitive swimmers additional morning sessions are available, and for those wishing to perform at the highest standards there is also the option of joining the UBSC High Performance programme. This offers additional coaching both at the University Pool and at Hengrove Park, Bristol's 50m pool. Competitions The most important events in the swimming team's calendar are the BUCS events; Short Course, Long Course and the Teams competition. BUCS Short Course is normally held in late November, and Long course in early February. The qualifying round and finals of the Teams competition is normally held in mid-March. We aim to send as many swimmers as we can to these events, entering a second team if possible to the Teams event, to offer a range of opportunities for our swimmers to experience University-level competition. Where possible, the team also tries to enter as many university galas as it can. Recently the team has entered the Exeter and Cardiff Varsity galas, as well as competing in the annual Bristol-UWE Varsity match at the Union pool. Opportunities are also available for swimmers to enter local and regional competitions. United Bristol Swimming Club In 2012, the University of Bristol became one of the founding members of the United Bristol Swimming Club. UBSC unites Bristol Penguins, Bristol Henleaze, Bristol North, UBSWPC and UWE Bristol to ensure that all members receive the coaching and support necessary to compete at the highest level. UBSC offers a top level performance programme which provides the opportunity for those achieving top times and showing the most potential to be entered into the performance programme.
